J-STD-001 Space Addendum
J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3 Manufacturing
Not every electronics contract manufacturer is equipped to meet the soldering and assembly standards required for defense and space applications. J-STD-001ES is the Space Addendum to the IPC J-STD-001 Requirements for Soldering Electrical and Electronic Assemblies, and it represents the most demanding tier of soldering quality in the industry. It is a NASA-accepted certification standard and the benchmark adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense for mission-critical electronic assemblies. At VR Industries, every person involved in the soldering and inspection process is certified to J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3, and we maintain two in-house certified IPC trainers on staff to ensure that standard is upheld continuously.
What J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3 Requires
Class 3 is the highest classification under J-STD-001, governing high-reliability electronic products where continued performance is critical and where downtime or failure is not an option. The Space Addendum extends those Class 3 requirements further, addressing the additional environmental and reliability demands of space and high-reliability defense applications.
Meeting this standard is not a matter of occasional compliance. At VR Industries, J-STD-001ES Class 3 requirements govern how we cut stencils, place and solder components, conduct automated optical inspection, and perform final assembly review. Every step in our process has been developed and validated against this standard, and our two in-house J-STD-001 Space Addendum certified trainers ensure our soldering and inspection workforce maintains certification on an ongoing basis.
Our J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3 capabilities include:
- Certified soldering and inspection workforce across all production programs
- Two in-house J-STD-001 Space Addendum CITs (Certified IPC Trainers) maintaining workforce qualification
- Stencil design and component placement processes validated to Space Addendum Class 3 requirements
- Automated optical inspection integrated at every appropriate stage of production
- All assemblies certified to J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610 standards, or as contractually agreed

Built for Defense and Space Programs
Our J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3 certification is the foundation of our military and defense electronics manufacturing capabilities. You will find our assembly work across every branch of the U.S. military, and our manufacturing processes are designed from the ground up to meet the quality, traceability, and documentation requirements that defense contractors demand.
This certification works in concert with our ITAR registration and ISO 9001:2015 quality management system to give defense and space OEMs a manufacturing partner whose credentials span the full scope of their program requirements. Our incoming inspection procedures capture original manufacturer traceability information before any component enters our stockroom, and every engineering and process document change is traceable back to its originating document and maintained in a secured location.
For OEMs developing space-grade electronic assemblies or high-reliability defense systems, J-STD-001 Space Addendum Class 3 certification is a non-negotiable supplier qualification. VR Industries meets that bar and maintains it through ongoing training, audits, and process discipline every day.
